Moving your daily routine to another country is easier when you know the local rhythm. This guide explains how daily life works in Torrevieja: when people eat, when shops open and close, what to do if you need a pharmacy at night, and which numbers to keep handy. It is written for guests staying a few weeks or the whole winter, and it is based on official and local sources, so it is a good companion to our guide to the best things to do in Torrevieja.
The short version: lunch is the main meal and comes late, dinner is later still, many small shops close for a few hours in the afternoon, Sundays and holidays are quiet, and almost everything in Torrevieja can be checked on Google Maps. Here are the details.
Meal times in Spain: eat later than you are used to
Spanish days start light, with coffee and a pastry. Lunch is the main meal and usually takes place between 1 and 3 pm, and dinner rarely starts before about 9 pm, with many Spaniards sitting down at 10 pm or later. Outside those hours, many traditional restaurants do not serve food: the bar may offer only drinks. Torrevieja is used to international visitors, so many restaurants, especially international ones, keep their kitchens open all day, but if you want a traditional place, plan around Spanish hours.
| Meal | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | Light, usually coffee with a pastry at a café |
| Lunch | 1 to 3 pm, the main meal of the day |
| Dinner | From about 9 pm, often 10 pm or later |
Three small tips
- Look for the menú del día, a set lunch with several courses, bread and a drink, usually the best-value meal of the day.
- Tipping is not expected in Spain. Rounding up or leaving a few coins for good service is plenty.
- Bottled water is standard in restaurants, and free tap water is unusual.
Shops, supermarkets and the siesta
Many small shops close for a few hours in the afternoon and reopen in the evening, while larger supermarkets and shopping centres usually stay open through the day. Sundays and public holidays are different: opening is limited, and only some supermarkets in tourist areas open, for part of the day. Do not leave your Sunday shopping to the last minute: buy what you need on Saturday, or check the store's hours on Google Maps before you go.
Torrevieja also has a large weekly market every Friday morning on Avenida Delfina Viudes, where most stallholders only take cash. You can read more about it, the salt lakes, the seafront walk and other plans in our guide to the best things to do in Torrevieja.
Public holidays and local fiestas
On national, regional and local holidays, offices and many shops close. Examples for the coming months are 9 October (Day of the Valencian Community), 12 October (Spain's National Day), 8 December (Immaculate Conception) and 25 December. Torrevieja's own local holidays in 2026 were 13 April (San Vicente Ferrer) and 16 July (Virgen del Carmen). Check the municipal calendar each year, because dates change.
Pharmacies, doctors and emergencies
- Emergencies: call 112, the European emergency number. It works free of charge and has English-speaking operators.
- Pharmacy on duty: pharmacies take turns to stay open at night and on holidays. The easiest way to find the nearest one is the on-duty pharmacies in Torrevieja. Pharmacies also post the nearest on-duty pharmacy on their door.
- Hospital with English-speaking care: Quirónsalud Torrevieja international patient service offers medical care in English and 24-hour emergency care. Check with your insurance what it covers before you travel.

Is Google Maps enough?
Mostly yes: opening hours on Google Maps are usually right for restaurants, supermarkets and pharmacies. But it is less reliable on holidays and in the low season, when some places change their schedule, so for anything important, such as a pharmacy on a Sunday, check the official finder above or call ahead.
